Tracing back the history of the Newars in Sikkim, Rhenock of the Great Chandra Nursery fame,  where they first arrived here invited amidst wild protest in thick forest-land full of ferocious animals. Had it not been for the courage, foresight and determination of the leadership in Taksari Chandrabir Newar (1837-1900), the place would not have been what it is today. Since this writer himself happen to belong to it having two mothers from the same family, it is but natural for him and to our readers to bear with, if he dwells upon more on the Great Chandra Nursery family, this place and everything he may look into from this angle sharp and try relate things to them most. He is proud to belong to this family, as he owes much to it and feels indebted twice than anyone else to it!

With things now cleared, let us proceed with it further.

Success is the good fortune that comes from aspiration, desperation, perspiration and inspiration.

Without mention of this gem of a person, Taksari Chandrabir Newar, our approach would not head towards correctly and in right direction. His name and fame had spread beyond Sikkim as we could understand even as student from the textbook we read. It is unfortunate that with the dust of time gathering over the history of the period our people to become so ungrateful even before two generations in between has passed that he or his two sons Rai Saheb Ratna Bahadur Pradhan and Babu Durga Shamsher Pradhan, who established the Chandra Nursery in fond memory of his great contributions here to place this tiny Himalayan Kingdom Sikkim in the world map, are no longer remembered even in  their own home turf !

Like love and smoke, the name and fame could not remain hidden and the fragrance had spread beyond the territorial boundaries. Appropriately, Dr. Paras Mani Pradhan (January 1, 1898 - February 2, 1986) the literary giant to stand tall high and above all for his contributions in the field of education in the entire country, named him amongst the ten enlisted as Our Pride (हाम्रा गौरवविभूति wealth). Since 1935 he wrote on their life and contributions and publicized them far and wide through different periodicals and publications and also by including them in the text books approved by the Education Department of the Government of West Bengal. They are as follows:

1.       Ganga Prasad Pradhan

2.       Kul Bahadur Pradhan

3.       Harka Dhoj Pradhan (1865-1934)

4.       Damber Singh Gurung

5.       Smt. Maya Devi Chettri

6.       Taksari Chandrabir Pradhan

7.       Hari Prasad Pradhan

8.       Chhabi Lal Singh

9.       Tenzing Norgey Sherpa

10.    Col. Siddhiman Rai

11.    Jamadar Gaze Ghale

12.    Subedar major Lal Bahadur Thapa

Besides the above historical luminaries, he had also named 27 personalities to be Our Pride in 1938, written on them to be the First Nepalese and brought out the Gyanmala Part I. This writer is yet to lay his hands on it as this information is from Dr. Parasmaniko Jeevanyatra  by his second son Nagendra Mani Pradhan (First Edition August 1991). There being no other a person from Sikkim, we can have well the idea what heights he had scaled in the country during the period and thereafter. We reproduce for the benefit of our avid readers the life sketch Taksari Chandrabir Pradhan in original in our Research page.

Rest I leave to the scholars to further study and  research on his contributions to unfold not only the history of the Newars in Sikkim but of Sikkim itself.
