Rajiva Shanker Shresta, Successor-in-Office and Ranjana Shresta of the Karuna Devi Smarak Dharmarth Guthi (Karuna Guthi) along with the family members attended the 9th Convention of the Newah Organization of America (NOA) in the Potomac Community Center, Potomac Maryland USA on Sunday the 30th May 2010.  Speaking as the Special Guest, Shresta apprised the august gathering of the advent and contribution of the Newar community in Sikkim since the arrival of Taksari Chandrabir Newar some 150 years ago.

Extending hearty felicitations on behalf of all the Newars of Sikkim and India, thanking for the golden opportunity given to speak on the Sikkim Newars and appreciating the role played by organizations like NOA (or Ameriki Newah Guthi) in the conservation and promotion of Newar language, culture and tradition, Shresta stressed the need to work together for the betterment of our society. Whatever be the difference of opinion at individual level, the common goal should be achieved in the best of our capacity and capability. Successful we are contributing to the society in whatever capacity, position and wherever working with due loyalty to the government, state and the country we serve in. Not comments and criticism but suggest probable solution as way out to tackle the difficult situation we have been passing through. Mutual respect, better understanding and brotherhood would help serve greater Newar interest towards the conservation and preservation of our identity and ethos.
Tracing the history in Sikkim, Shresta said that the Newar Guthi was first established in the Sri 3 Dhaneshwar Shivalaya Mahadev Mandir at Rhenock some 150 years ago by our jewel and  Vibhuti Taksari Chandrabir Newar. There the Guthi still exists. Outside Nepal it is only here the world over that the Gai Jatra is organized every year. Considering the need, an appeal was first made in 1982 to have Sikkim Newa: Guthi that was registered 1994.

Grateful and to thank the Government for the recognition of the Newar as an official language in Sikkim in 1995, Newa: Varna, Lipi Ra Bhasha Parichaya was published and is included in the Vivaranatmak Shodh Granth by the Nepal Rajkiya Pragya Pratishthan.

Besides Newa: for Sikkim Newa: Guthi, Newar edition the Sikkim Herald was brought out for first time ever in 1996. Recognition of the Newar language saw a Newar translator in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly Secretariat and Newar language teachers in some schools.

To celebrate the Golden Jubilee of India's Independence, a grand cultural programme was held by Sikkim Newar Guthi in association with the Nepal Bhasha Manka: Khala: and a wall calendar was published in 1998. Newar cuisine is equally popular in Sikkim too during fairs and festivals.

Sikkim Newars are with the Akhil Bharatiya Newar Sangathan, support the World Newah Organization and in solidarity with the NESOCA as we trust their sincere efforts. It hurts only when the leadership go stray and overdo things. Shresta also shared some wise words from his late father, “In social bodies like ours, if politics enters through the main door, our unity vanishes through crevices and does not even need a window to disappear.” and ”Do not  be a party to a divisive factor nor  participate  to be such an element nor yourself be an agent in such a process.”

Sikkim Newars influenced by the theme of this Convention - "Newah Cultural Heritage and Tourism in Nepal" believed it would help promote and enhance  mutual understanding, trust and universal brotherhood at an international level as well since these are the mainstream and fountainhead of our religion, faith and identity too.

The Newars serve their best everywhere sometimes fighting with own self, sometimes with own people and sometimes even hostile environment. Competition is acceptable, but with the present day supremacy of electoral battle with majority comprising population, not only our identity but even the existence is at stake. Attempts are made to displace us from our own soil. Often we are deprived of our legal and valid rights through conspiracy of every design possible.

Newah Organization of America showed love and dedication not only to our race, language and culture but also to our state and country. Thinking right brings results right that motivate to better perform and deliver better, he believed sharing a line from James Russel Lowe, "Reputation is only a candle of wavering and uncertain flame, and easily blown out, but it is the light by which the world looks for and find merit."

The President of the NOA, Rajesh Shrestha released his book Newar : Haami Yastai Chhaun  Its English and Newar editions are also on the anvil.

I do not want a friend who smiles when I smile, who weeps when I weep, for my shadow in the pool can do better than that.
